Sonic Central May 2021: Everything Revealed During The Anniversary Presentation

Sega reveals new programs, partnerships, video games, merchandise, and more during their Sonic the Hedgehog 30th anniversary live presentation titled "Sonic Central." Here is a breakdown of what happened during the event regarding the unveiling of a new Sonic Team game project to Sonic's future animated appearances.

To many's surprise, Sega unveiled that the Sonic Team, who developed many beloved Sonic the Hedgehog video games like Sonic Generations and Colors, is developing a new fantastical Sonic the Hedgehog title slated for 2022. The game will release on the Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5 during said year.

Fans only received a short teaser trailer for the video game project featuring Sonic picking up speed while leaving behind a trail of digital, sparkly energy. Whether this game is a sequel to a well-loved game developed by the team or a new game entirely remains unknown.

Sega also unveiled two projects related to the well-beloved Sonic the Hedgehog video game titled Sonic Colors. It will receive a remastered version called Sonic Colors: Ultimate, developed by Blind Squirrel Entertainment. It releases on the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Epic Games Store on September 7th. Sonic Colors Ultimate is receiving some perks regarding tie-ins with the 2020 live-action film and a new mode called Rival Rush.


Regarding cinema, Sonic Colors will also have a dedicated two-part animated series called Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps featuring beloved Sonic the Hedgehog voice actor, Roger Craig Smith. This animated series is scheduled to air sometime this summer and takes place within the canon of the Sonic Colors universe.

Not only will Sonic the Hedgehog be gracing computer screens this summer, but he'll also be appearing in a Netflix animated project in 2022 called Sonic Prime. The Man of Action team (responsible for series like Ben 10) will be handling this series and claim it will run for twenty-four-episodes. It will feature Sonic the Hedgehog doing what he does best, saving the world.


Television appearances aside, Sonic will be making a few pit stops and appear in other video games like Two Point Hospital, Lost Judgment, and in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game.


As for the PC and standard gaming markets/platforms, Sega will be gracing consumers with more exciting appearances from Sonic the Hedgehog. Firstly, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation Now, and Amazon Luna services will add specific Sonic games to their line-up, regarding Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, and Team Sonic Racing. Here are the specifics:


  • Epic Games Store will receive Sonic Mania on June 24th.

  • PlayStation Now will receive Sonic Mania & Team Sonic Racing on June 1st.

  • Amazon Luna will receive Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing sometime this year.

Sonic the Hedgehog mobile gamers also received some parting gifts to commemorate his 30th anniversary. Firstly, Super Sonic will become a playable character in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle; a new pirate-themed event is coming to Sonic Dash featuring Pirate Sonic and Captain Shadow attire, and Sonic Racing's adding iconic vehicles, personalities, and tracks.


Lastly, a symphonic-like orchestral event will happen sometime on June 23rd with a sneak peek happening in Geoff Keighley's Summer Games Fest event. The symphony will be free for everyone to enjoy and features many iconic soundtracks and musicians.
